Moscow, Russia – In a troubling escalation of anti-LGBTQ+ measures, Russian authorities conducted a series of raids targeting LGBTQ+ nightclubs and arrested individuals accused of promoting so-called “LGBT propaganda.”
Nightclubs Raided, Patrons Detained
Early Saturday morning, police raided the popular Arma and Mono nightclubs in Moscow. Dramatic videos circulating on social media show officers storming the venues, ordering patrons to lie on the floor, and confiscating electronic devices. At Mono, individuals were seen being escorted out with their hands raised.
These raids follow the Russian government’s expanded laws criminalizing any positive depiction of LGBTQ+ relationships. This legislation, enacted last year, has significantly widened the scope of punishable activities, creating an increasingly hostile environment for LGBTQ+ individuals.
Targeting Community Advocates
In addition to nightclub raids, Russian authorities arrested the head of the “Men Travel” agency, accusing him of organizing a trip to Egypt for individuals perceived to support “non-traditional sexual values.” Such actions demonstrate the government’s intent to suppress LGBTQ+ activity beyond Russia’s borders.
