TRAI's New Rule Brings Relief to Mobile Users with Affordable Calling and SMS Plans
For the past few months, mobile users in India have been expressing frustration over increasing mobile recharge tariffs. In July 2024, leading telecom operators like Jio, Airtel, and Vodafone Idea (VI) raised their tariff rates by up to 25%, leaving customers with no choice but to pay for plans they often didn’t need. Only BSNL refrained from increasing its prices and continued to roll out affordable recharge plans.
In a positive development, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has introduced a new regulation that will benefit customers who don’t require mobile data.
One of the key issues raised by users was the lack of flexibility in recharge options. Most mobile plans included both data and calling services, forcing users — even those with 2G and 3G phones — to pay for expensive 4G data plans they didn’t need.
To address this, TRAI issued guidelines on January 7, 2025, mandating all telecom companies to launch separate recharge plans for calling and SMS-only services. This move ensures that users who don’t require data can access affordable recharge options tailored to their needs.
This decision has been welcomed by millions of mobile users across the country, especially senior citizens and those using basic feature phones.
In a recent interview, the TRAI Chairman emphasized the importance of promoting data usage while also giving consumers the freedom to choose plans that meet their specific needs. The Chairman stated, “TRAI is committed to balancing the interests of both telecom companies and consumers. It is crucial that telecom operators offer plans catering to various user requirements.”
In addition to the new regulation on recharge plans, TRAI has implemented measures to enhance the traceability of commercial text messages, with the goal of combating spam and fraudulent communication.
TRAI is actively working with sector regulators, government departments, Principal Entities (PEs), and Telemarketers (TMs) to ensure smooth compliance with the new rules.
As telecom companies implement TRAI’s new guidelines, users can expect more transparency and better pricing in recharge plans. For those using 2G/3G phones or who primarily rely on calling and texting, the introduction of data-free plans is a welcome change.
By addressing both affordability and safety concerns, TRAI is reinforcing its commitment to protecting consumer interests while fostering a fair and competitive telecom market.
