Australian Inspirational Figure Rory Callum Sykes Among Victims of Los Angeles Wildfires

Rory Callum Sykes, a 32-year-old Australian man known for his resilience and inspirational story as a child living with disabilities, tragically lost his life in the devastating Los Angeles wildfires, his family has confirmed.

A Life of Perseverance and Impact
Rory, born blind and living with cerebral palsy, first rose to prominence as a young motivational speaker. His journey of overcoming adversity, undergoing surgeries to regain his sight, and learning to walk inspired countless people worldwide. His mother, Shelley Sykes, shared that Rory had always been eager to explore the world despite the challenges he faced.

In addition to his public speaking, Rory was a passionate gamer, philanthropist, and investor. He co-founded the organization Happy Charity with his mother to support others in need.

A Tragic End in Malibu
Rory was staying in a cottage on his family’s 17-acre Malibu estate when the wildfires overwhelmed the property on Wednesday, January 8. Shelley Sykes announced the heartbreaking news in a post on X, formerly Twitter, expressing her devastation over the loss of her “wonderful son.”

Shelley shared her struggles to save Rory amid the chaos, explaining that the water supply had been cut off and firefighters faced immense challenges due to a drop in water pressure. Despite her injuries, Shelley tried to rescue her son but was unable to lift or move him.

He said, ‘Mom, leave me,’ and no mom can leave their kid,” Shelley tearfully told 10 News First. She later confirmed that Rory died from carbon monoxide poisoning, as fire officials informed her.

A Community in Mourning
Rory’s death is one of at least 11 confirmed fatalities resulting from the wildfires that began on Tuesday, January 7, according to the Los Angeles County medical examiner. The fires have caused widespread destruction, leaving families and communities devastated.

Australian officials have confirmed they are providing consular assistance to Rory’s family but have not released further details, citing privacy concerns.

Remembering Rory Callum Sykes
Shelley Sykes, who authored a book about her son’s inspiring life, shared that Rory “overcame so much” and was determined to live fully despite his physical challenges. She expressed profound grief, stating, “He will be incredibly missed.”

Rory’s legacy as a motivational figure, philanthropist, and advocate for resilience will continue to inspire others even in his absence.
