Southern California Faces Severe Windstorm and Wildfire Crisis: Palisades Fire

A life-threatening windstorm is ravaging Southern California, driving wildfires across several areas, including Pacific Palisades, Altadena, and Sylmar. Firefighters are battling multiple blazes as the region braces for further devastation due to strong winds and dry conditions.

Current Wildfires and Impacted Areas

  1. Pacific Palisades Fire
    • The fire has caused widespread destruction, including the loss of the iconic Reel Inn restaurant and other structures.

    • Mandatory Evacuations: Evacuation orders extend to Altadena, Pasadena, Arcadia, and Sierra Madre. Residents in Arcadia, north of Orange Grove Avenue, have been directed to the Arcadia Community Center for temporary shelter.
    • Damage Reported: Homes and properties in Altadena have suffered extensive damage.
    • Senior Living Center Evacuated: Over 90 residents were pushed in wheelchairs and hospital beds to safety before being transported out of the area.
  3. Sylmar’s Hurst Fire
    • A new brush fire erupted late Tuesday night, prompting immediate mandatory evacuations.

Windstorm and Red Flag Warnings

  • Wind Speeds: Gusts are expected to peak early Wednesday morning, reaching up to 80 mph in many areas and exceeding 100 mph in mountainous regions.
  • Areas Under Red Flag Warnings:
    • Malibu Coast
    • Santa Monica Mountains Recreational Area
    • San Gabriel Valley
    • San Fernando Valley
    • Calabasas
    • Santa Clarita Valley

These warnings remain in effect until 6 p.m. Thursday, underscoring the elevated fire risk.

  • Pacific Palisades Charter High School: Confirmed to be on fire, adding to concerns about the safety of local educational institutions.
  • Getty Villa Museum: Flames have engulfed trees and brush on the museum’s grounds.
  • Hundreds of Abandoned Vehicles: Fire crews have reported pushing aside abandoned cars on Sunset Boulevard to facilitate emergency operations.

School Closures

Due to the wildfire emergency, multiple Southern California school districts have announced closures, including:

  • Azusa Unified School District
  • Pasadena Unified School District
  • Burbank Unified School District
  • Arcadia Unified School District
  • Glendale Unified School District
