The political landscape in Bihar has heated up once again as Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav extended an open offer to Chief Minister Nitish Kumar to realign with the INDIA Bloc, a coalition of opposition parties. However, Nitish Kumar and his party Janata Dal-United (JD-U) downplayed the overture, while RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav dismissed any chance of a tie-up, fueling speculation about the future of alliances in the state.
In an interview, Lalu Yadav suggested that his party remains open to welcoming Nitish Kumar back into the fold, despite their rocky history.
“Our doors are always open for him. I will forgive him again if he decides to join us,” Lalu stated, emphasizing the importance of collaboration against the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA).
Nitish Kumar has aligned with the RJD twice in the past decade:
Despite Lalu Yadav’s remarks, his son and Leader of the Opposition Tejashwi Yadav reiterated there is no chance of the RJD aligning with Nitish Kumar.
“What my father said was to satisfy journalists’ curiosity. The doors for Nitish Kumar’s return are closed,” he asserted during a media interaction at the Raj Bhawan after the oath-taking ceremony of the new Governor.
Tejashwi emphasized that the 2025 assembly elections will usher in a new beginning for Bihar, with the people ready to replace the NDA government with an RJD-led alliance.
Leaders from both the JD-U and BJP dismissed the idea of Nitish Kumar rejoining the INDIA Bloc.
The offer and rebuttal come as both the INDIA Bloc and NDA prepare for the upcoming elections. The INDIA Bloc was formed in July 2023 as a coalition of opposition parties, including the RJD, aiming to challenge the BJP-led NDA in the 2024 general elections and state assembly polls.
In Bihar, shifting alliances are not uncommon. As JD-U leader Maheshwar Hazari aptly noted:
“In politics, there are no permanent friends or enemies.”
Nitish Kumar’s potential realignment with the RJD could significantly impact the 2025 assembly elections, but the feasibility remains uncertain given Tejashwi Yadav’s categorical rejection.
As Bihar gears up for crucial elections, the political temperature continues to rise. While Lalu Prasad Yadav’s offer may have sparked intrigue, the rejection by Tejashwi Yadav and JD-U’s commitment to the NDA suggest that any realignment remains unlikely. However, in the ever-evolving landscape of Bihar politics, surprises cannot be ruled out. The state’s voters now await clarity on alliances as parties gear up for the 2025 polls.
