The global mixed martial arts (MMA) community is mourning the loss of Hakaraia Wilson, a professional fighter from New Zealand who tragically passed away at the age of 26.
Police confirmed responding to a sudden death on the morning of January 1 in Gisborne, a city on New Zealand’s North Island. Authorities have stated the death is not being treated as suspicious.
Wilson had been in Gisborne to attend the annual Rhythm and Vines music festival, according to Te Ao Māori News. The cause of death has not been disclosed.
Hakaraia Wilson began his amateur MMA journey in 2020, eventually amassing a 4-3 professional record. His most recent victory came in October 2023 at Canggu Fight Night in Bali, Indonesia, where he defeated Mark Alcoba of the Philippines.
The news of Wilson’s passing has sparked heartfelt tributes:
In an interview with Radio New Zealand (RNZ), Wilson described how his Māori heritage shaped his life and career:
“Being Māori is our superpower. It’s our strength. We can draw upon that whenever we need to.”
Wilson grew up in Rotorua and Ruatoki in New Zealand’s Bay of Plenty region. Raised by his father, he first trained in mau rākau, a traditional Māori martial art, before transitioning to boxing, wrestling, and MMA.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Wilson moved to San Diego, California, to further his MMA training. Speaking about the move, he reflected:
“I always pictured myself moving to America eventually to make the most out of my career and my youth. Part of me felt guilty for leaving my family. But for this dream, I understand that sometimes, I need to put myself first.”
Wilson emphasized his mission to use MMA to showcase Māori culture:
“MMA is my vehicle to show the world how beautiful our culture is.”
Hakaraia Wilson’s untimely passing leaves a void in the MMA world, but his determination, cultural pride, and warrior spirit will continue to inspire those who knew him and those who admired his journey.
Rest in peace, young warrior.
