Fire Erupts at Bryant Park’s Winter Village, Destroying Holiday Market Stalls
A festive morning at Bryant Park’s Winter Village in New York City turned chaotic when a fire erupted, engulfing several holiday market stalls and sending plumes of thick black smoke into the Manhattan skyline. The fire broke out early on Friday, prompting an immediate response from the New York Fire Department (FDNY).
The blaze began just after 9 a.m. near the iconic New York Public Library and within blocks of major landmarks like the Empire State Building and Rockefeller Center. Emergency services arrived swiftly to combat the flames, but the fire managed to destroy four vendor stalls completely and caused damage to a fifth.
A security guard was caught on video urging bystanders to evacuate, shouting, “Get out, get out, let’s go!” as flames intensified at one of the stalls. FDNY battalion chief Joe Castellano confirmed that while the cause of the fire remains under investigation, no injuries were reported.
The fire also caused some damage to the roof of the park’s ice rink, a key feature of the Winter Village. Despite the disruption, the park’s management announced on social media that The Rink and The Lodge remain operational, and most of the Holiday Shops reopened later in the day.
“We are grateful for the FDNY’s quick response to the incident that occurred earlier today,” the park’s statement read, ensuring visitors that unaffected shops resumed business as usual.
The source of the fire is still unclear, but the incident marks the second significant holiday market fire in New York City this season. On December 16, a fire erupted at the Herald Square Holiday Market, requiring a response from over 60 firefighters and emergency personnel. In that incident, a firefighter was seriously injured.
While New Yorkers and tourists alike flock to these holiday markets for festive cheer, these recent fires have cast a shadow over the city’s bustling Christmas season. Authorities have not established any connections between the two fires, but heightened safety measures may become necessary to prevent further incidents.
As investigations continue, Bryant Park and its vendors strive to maintain the holiday spirit, with most shops reopening to serve eager visitors.
New Yorkers are encouraged to remain vigilant while enjoying the city’s holiday attractions. Authorities remind residents and tourists to report any suspicious activities or safety concerns immediately.
