Chennai Rains: Witnesses Record Rainfall, More Showers Expected

Chennai has experienced an exceptionally wet season this year, with both the Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam observatories crossing 100 cm of rainfall in less than three months. The city may continue to see rainfall on Friday, despite the low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal dissipating.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast light to moderate rainfall for Chennai and its suburbs, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning in some areas.

Rainfall Milestones and Christmas Records

Since October 1, the Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam observatories have recorded 106 cm and 101 cm of rainfall, respectively. This represents an excess of 22 cm and 19 cm above the normal average.

Notably, Chennai Rains experienced on Christmas Day—an event that has occurred only four times since 2001, with the other years being 2001, 2003, and 2022.

On December 25, the city saw light rain spells that continued into the following day, adding 2 cm of rainfall at each observatory.

Rainfall Statistics and Seasonal Observations

  • October 1 to December 26:
    • Chennai has recorded a cumulative rainfall of 105 cm, around 32% above normal.
    • Tamil Nadu overall has received 57 cm, also 32% above normal.
  • Despite the heavy seasonal rainfall, the Nungambakkam observatory reported its lowest 24-hour rainfall for December in the last 10 years, with 10 cm recorded between November 30 and December 1 during Cyclone Fengal.

The highest 24-hour rainfall in a decade remains at 29 cm, recorded on December 2, 2015.

Upcoming Weather Predictions

According to an IMD bulletin, the weather forecast for Chennai and the surrounding areas includes:

  • December 27:
    • Light to moderate rainfall with possible thunderstorms.
    • Partly cloudy skies.
    • Temperatures of around 30°C (maximum) and 23-24°C (minimum).
  • Rest of Tamil Nadu:
    • Light to moderate rainfall in isolated areas.
    • Mist or haze during early morning hours until December 30.

Monsoon’s Final Showers

Weather blogger Pradeep John, popularly known as the “Tamil Nadu Weatherman,” noted in an online post:

“Enjoy the last monsoon rainfall. Chennai, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, and Chengelpet have a chance of rainfall today and tomorrow.”

With the monsoon season nearing its end, the city’s residents are advised to enjoy the cooler weather while preparing for possible thunderstorms in the coming days.

Stay safe and stay updated with the latest weather forecasts.
