A portion of the Santa Cruz Wharf collapsed and floated away on Monday afternoon, creating chaos and prompting a series of safety alerts. The National Weather Service (NWS) confirmed the collapse, which occurred amid unusually high surf conditions along California’s Central Coast.
The wharf was immediately evacuated and will remain closed indefinitely as Santa Cruz Parks & Recreation officials assess the damage.
The collapse coincides with a major swell event, with wave heights reaching up to 26 feet in some areas of the Central Coast. These hazardous conditions are expected to persist through Tuesday.
Officials have issued stern warnings for the public to stay away from beaches, coastal overlooks, jetties, and cliffs, citing life-threatening conditions.
The collapse of the pier is part of broader weather-related disruptions in Santa Cruz:
California Governor Gavin Newsom has been briefed on the incident. The Governor’s Office of Emergency Services is coordinating with local agencies to manage the aftermath of the collapse and broader weather impacts.
The situation is reminiscent of the Seacliff State Beach pier collapse during a severe storm in the winter of 2023, highlighting the ongoing vulnerability of California’s coastal infrastructure to extreme weather events.
The Santa Cruz Wharf collapse serves as a sobering reminder of the immense power of nature and the importance of heeding safety warnings during severe weather events.
