Cyclone Update, Chennai Rains: Deep Depression Near Tamil Nadu to Bring Widespread Rains

Chennai to Witness Week-Long Rainfall, Cyclone Alert Issued for Tamil Nadu Ports

A deep depression in the Bay of Bengal, located approximately 500 km east of Chennai as of Monday, is expected to bring significant weather changes to Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. The system is moving southwestward and is likely to weaken as it shifts southward. It is expected to make landfall near Tamil Nadu’s delta districts on December 26 before crossing the state and heading toward the Arabian Sea.

IMD Weather Forecast

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued weather warnings for Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, predicting:

  • Light to moderate rain with thunderstorms in several areas over the next few days.
  • Moderate rainfall in Chennai and surrounding areas on December 24 and 25, with light fog possible in the early morning hours.
  • Widespread rain across Tamil Nadu on December 26 and 27, as the cyclonic system influences the region.

Cyclone Alert for Ports

The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has issued a third-level cyclone alert for seven ports in Tamil Nadu:

  1. Chennai
  2. Cuddalore
  3. Nagapattinam
  4. Ennore
  5. Kattupalli
  6. Puducherry
  7. Karaikal

The alert stems from the low-pressure system in the central western Bay of Bengal, which has now weakened into a depression. Strong winds and rain are expected in these areas until December 25 as the system moves west-southwest toward the southwest Bay of Bengal.

Impact on Tamil Nadu

  • Rainfall: Moderate to heavy rainfall is anticipated, particularly in delta districts and coastal areas.
  • Ports: Ports in the affected regions may experience strong winds, with potential disruptions to shipping activities.
  • Infrastructure and Agriculture: The impact of the depression is being closely monitored, especially given the recent damage caused by Cyclone Fengal.

Recent Cyclone Fengal’s Aftermath

  • Timeline: Struck Tamil Nadu and Puducherry from November 29 to December 1.
  • Casualties: 12 lives lost.
  • Agricultural Damage: Inundated 2,11,139 hectares of agricultural and horticultural land.
  • Infrastructure Losses: Extensive damage to public and private infrastructure.

Northeast Monsoon and Excess Rainfall

Tamil Nadu is currently experiencing heavy rain due to the ongoing northeast monsoon, which has brought 14% excess rainfall this season:

  • State Average: 447 mm (against the expected 393 mm).
  • Chennai: 845 mm (16% above average).
  • Coimbatore: 47% increase above normal levels.

Safety Recommendations

  • Avoid Coastal Areas: Strong winds and waves make beaches and coastal areas unsafe.
  • Monitor Weather Alerts: Stay updated with IMD warnings and advisories.
  • Prepare for Heavy Rain: Ensure proper drainage and take precautions to avoid waterlogging.

As the deep depression approaches Tamil Nadu, preparedness and vigilance will be key to minimizing disruptions and ensuring safety.
