A devastating storm pounded California’s central coast on Monday, causing widespread destruction and forcing evacuations. Among the most alarming incidents was the partial collapse of a Santa Cruz pier under construction, leaving two people rescued from the ocean while another swam to safety. The end of the pier housed public restrooms and the shuttered Dolphin restaurant, which broke off and drifted half a mile before lodging at the base of the San Lorenzo River.

Local authorities urged residents to stay clear of low-lying coastal areas. “You are risking your life,” warned the National Weather Service’s Bay Area office, emphasizing the hazards posed by the powerful waves and debris in the water.

The collapse has created significant dangers for nearby boats. The pilings from the broken section of the wharf remain in the ocean, described as “serious hazards” by Mayor Keeley.
