A horrifying incident unfolded on Sunday morning in Brooklyn, New York Subway, when a woman was set on fire aboard a stationary subway train at the Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue station. The New York Police Department (NYPD) described the crime as one of the most depraved acts imaginable. The suspect, a man who reportedly emigrated from Guatemala in 2018, has been apprehended thanks to the vigilance of high school students who tipped off the authorities.
At approximately 7:30 AM local time (12:30 GMT), the victim was seated in a stationary F train carriage when the suspect approached her and used a lighter to ignite her clothing. Police believe there was no prior interaction or relationship between the two.
“Officers were on patrol on an upper level of the station, smelled and saw smoke, and went to investigate,” said Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch. Upon reaching the scene, they found the victim engulfed in flames.
Officers quickly extinguished the fire using fire extinguishers. Tragically, the victim succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The suspect, who initially remained on the platform near the burning train, was captured on CCTV, and his images were swiftly disseminated by the NYPD.
Later that day, a group of high school students spotted the suspect on another subway train and immediately reported him to the police.
“I want to thank the young people who called 911 to help. They saw something, they said something, and they did something,” Commissioner Tisch said.
The suspect was apprehended at Herald Square station in Manhattan, near the Empire State Building. He was found with a lighter in his pocket at the time of his arrest.
The police are working to establish the victim’s identity and whether she was asleep or motionless before the attack occurred.
“She’s definitely there, she’s motionless… but to say if she’s asleep or not, we’re not 100% sure,” said NYPD official Joseph Gulotta.
Authorities have not yet determined why the suspect committed such an unprovoked act of violence.
Commissioner Tisch commended the swift action of the officers and the high school students, emphasizing the importance of community vigilance.
This incident has left New Yorkers horrified, highlighting the need for enhanced safety measures on public transportation systems.
The tragic subway attack in Brooklyn serves as a grim reminder of the unpredictability of urban violence. While the NYPD works diligently to uncover the motive behind this heinous act, the involvement of vigilant citizens underscores the critical role of community in public safety.
As the investigation continues, it is crucial to honor the memory of the victim and work towards ensuring such incidents are prevented in the future.
