Former Rep. Matt Gaetz Found to Have Violated Multiple Laws in House Ethics Committee Report
The House Ethics Committee has released a damning 37-page report concluding that former Florida Representative Matt Gaetz engaged in multiple violations of state laws and House rules, including sexual misconduct, drug use, and acceptance of impermissible gifts. The findings come after years of allegations surrounding Gaetz’s conduct while in office, marking the conclusion of his controversial tenure in Congress.
Gaetz, who resigned from Congress in November after briefly being considered for the role of Attorney General in a Trump administration, has denied all allegations of misconduct. He filed a lawsuit on Monday to block the report’s release, arguing that as a private citizen, he is no longer under the jurisdiction of the Ethics Committee.
In written responses to the committee, Gaetz denied having sex with a minor and rejected allegations of drug use. However, the committee emphasized that Gaetz refused to testify under oath.
Despite the damning findings, Gaetz has indicated he will remain active in politics, pledging to support Donald Trump in his political endeavors. Gaetz recently suggested a potential return to Congress, even floating the idea of participating in the election for House Speaker.
While the Ethics Committee’s report concludes its investigation, the repercussions of Gaetz’s actions are likely to echo for years to come, both for him personally and for the broader political landscape.
