IMD Issues Orange Alert for Chennai Rains: Heavy to Very Heavy Rain Expected on December 18

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Chennai on December 18, as a low-pressure system forming over the Bay of Bengal is expected to intensify. The alert warns residents of heavy to very heavy rainfall, urging them to remain prepared and stay informed with the latest updates.

Low-Pressure System in the Bay of Bengal

The low-pressure area currently lies over the central parts of the South Bay of Bengal and is expected to intensify further over the next 48 hours. This weather system will bring widespread rainfall across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal in the coming days.

Rainfall Predictions Across Tamil Nadu

Here is a day-wise breakdown of the rainfall forecast:

  • December 16:
    • Light to moderate rain is likely over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal regions.
  • December 17:
    • Heavy rainfall is expected in districts such as Chengalpattu, Cuddalore, Villupuram, and Mayiladuthurai.
    • Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram, Thiruvarur, and Nagapattinam are also likely to experience significant showers.
  • December 18:
    • Chennai is under an orange alert with forecasts of heavy to very heavy rainfall.
    • The districts of Chengalpattu, Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram, Cuddalore, Villupuram, Ranipet, Tiruvannamalai, Kallakurichi, Vellore, Ariyalur, and Mayiladuthurai are also likely to receive intense rainfall.
  • December 19-22:
    • Light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning is likely to occur over North and South Tamil Nadu, including Puducherry and Karaikal.
    • Heavy to very heavy rainfall is forecasted in districts such as Chennai, Chengalpattu, Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram, Ranipet, and Vellore during this period.

Precautions for Chennai Rains Residents

With the orange alert in place, Chennai residents are urged to take the following safety measures:

  1. Stay Indoors: Avoid unnecessary travel and remain indoors during heavy rainfall to ensure safety.
  2. Flood-Prone Areas: Avoid entering or traveling through flood-prone zones.
  3. Evacuation Instructions: Follow all official evacuation orders promptly and move to safer areas if advised.
  4. Weather Updates: Keep track of weather forecasts and updates from trusted sources such as the IMD to stay informed.
  5. Emergency Supplies: Ensure essentials like drinking water, food, flashlights, and first aid kits are readily available in case of disruptions.

Potential Government Measures

Given the possibility of heavy rains causing waterlogging and disruptions, the Tamil Nadu government may announce holidays for schools and offices in severely affected areas. Authorities will closely monitor the situation and issue updates as required.

Impact on Chennai Rains and Neighboring Districts

Chennai, a city often vulnerable to flooding during intense monsoons, is likely to experience traffic congestion and waterlogging in low-lying areas. Neighboring districts like Chengalpattu, Tiruvallur, and Kanchipuram could face similar challenges.

Residents are advised to remain vigilant and prepare for potential disruptions by securing their homes and planning travel accordingly.

The IMD’s orange alert for Chennai rains signals the possibility of intense rainfall on December 18, with further showers expected in the following days. Residents must prioritize safety, stay updated with official forecasts, and comply with government advisories to avoid risks during this period.
