In a concerning development, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) received a bomb threat email written in Russian on Friday, December 13, threatening to blow up its Mumbai campus with explosives. This marks the second such incident involving India’s central bank in just a month, raising security concerns.
According to sources, the threatening email led to immediate action from law enforcement. A case has been registered at the Mata Ramabai Marg police station in Mumbai, and the authorities have launched a thorough investigation into the matter.
The Mumbai police are currently working with cybercrime experts to trace the origin of the email and verify its credibility.
This is not the first instance where India’s top banking institution has received a bomb threat. In the past month, the RBI faced a similar incident, prompting security agencies to tighten surveillance around its premises.
This incident coincides with a wave of bomb threats targeting Delhi schools earlier this week. On December 13, several prominent schools in the national capital, including:
received threatening emails claiming explosives were planted on their premises.
The Delhi Fire Services confirmed that they received calls from the affected schools starting early morning, triggering panic and large-scale searches by multi-agency teams. Authorities later declared the threats as hoaxes, though they disrupted school activities and created significant anxiety among students, parents, and staff.
On December 9, similar threats were sent to 44 schools in Delhi, all of which were later confirmed to be false alarms. These frequent bomb threats are not only a drain on resources but also raise concerns about the psychological impact on children and communities.
Former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal reacted strongly to the rising incidents of bomb threats, questioning their repeated frequency and highlighting their potential impact on students. He emphasized the need for stringent measures to address these hoax threats and ensure the safety of children.
Security agencies across the country are now on high alert to address these recurring threats. Cybercrime units are working to trace the source of the threatening emails and identify any connections between the incidents at RBI and Delhi schools.
The bomb threat against the RBI, along with the ongoing incidents targeting schools, has highlighted the urgent need for enhanced cybersecurity and emergency response systems across critical institutions. While most of these threats have been identified as hoaxes, authorities continue to take them seriously to prevent any potential harm.
As investigations progress, law enforcement agencies are expected to provide updates on the origin and motive behind these threats.
