Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James will not play in Friday night’s game against the Minnesota Timberwolves, as confirmed by the team. This will mark his second consecutive missed game due to soreness in his left foot.
James, who missed the Lakers’ victory over the Portland Trail Blazers last Sunday, remains sidelined as the team continues to monitor his condition. If James returns to play against the Memphis Grizzlies on Sunday, this period of rest will provide him with eight days to recover and recalibrate.
Coach JJ Redick emphasized the importance of allowing LeBron to manage his workload, particularly given his age and the physical demands of the NBA. James, who turns 40 at the end of December, has been one of the league’s most consistent performers this season despite his lengthy career.
“In-game, he’s asked for a sub a couple of times because he’s gassed,” Redick explained. “We have to be aware of the cumulative effect of playing a lot of minutes. Sunday, being banged up with the foot issue, felt like a good opportunity for him to get some rest.”
The Lakers have taken advantage of a favorable schedule with only two games in a 10-day stretch (Dec. 9-18) to give their players, including James, a chance to recover. Redick provided the entire team with Monday off and made Tuesday an optional day for individual workouts.
Redick also confirmed that James has been away from the team this week for personal reasons. He did not participate in Tuesday’s optional sessions, though the coaching staff remains in regular communication with him and his athletic trainer, Mike Mancias.
Despite being in his record-tying 22nd NBA season, LeBron James has remained one of the top performers for the Lakers:
His consistency and leadership continue to drive the Lakers, although the team has faced struggles recently, losing seven of their last 10 games after an impressive 10-4 start.
The Lakers are also dealing with injuries to other key players:
The Lakers (13-11) face the Minnesota Timberwolves on Friday before returning home to play against the Memphis Grizzlies on Sunday. James’ absence gives the team an opportunity to rely on their other stars, including Anthony Davis and returning guard Austin Reaves, to shoulder the load.
Fans will be closely watching whether LeBron makes his return in time for the Memphis game, as the Lakers aim to regain momentum during this crucial stretch of the season.
LeBron James’ absence highlights the Lakers’ cautious approach to player health and workload management. With his foot soreness being closely monitored, the team remains hopeful for his return. Meanwhile, Austin Reaves and Anthony Davis’ statuses provide some optimism as the Lakers look to bounce back against a strong Timberwolves team.
Stay tuned for updates as the Lakers navigate this challenging phase of the season.
