Violent Protests Erupt in Maharashtra’s Parbhani
Maharashtra’s Parbhani city witnessed violent protests after an individual allegedly vandalized a glass-encased cement replica of the Indian Constitution at the base of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s statue near the Parbhani railway station. The incident, which occurred on Tuesday, led to massive public outrage and violent demonstrations across the district, prompting the administration to impose prohibitory orders.
On Tuesday, the accused, identified as Sopan Pawar, allegedly damaged the replica. Following the act, locals apprehended Pawar, beat him up, and handed him over to the police. According to Inspector General Shahaji Umap, the accused is reportedly suffering from mental health issues and undergoing treatment. Despite this explanation, locals demanded the death penalty for Pawar, fueling further unrest.

A State Reserve Police Force unit was deployed to assist local authorities. According to Umap, FIRs have been registered under charges of rioting, obstructing public servants, and criminal amendment Act sections for damage to public property. Nearly 50 individuals have been taken into custody, including prominent names like Anandraj Ambedkar, Vijay Wakode, and former mayor Ravindra Sonkamble.
