Karnataka Declares Public Holiday to Honour Former CM SM Krishna Death

The Karnataka government has declared a public holiday for all educational institutions and government offices across the state on Wednesday to honor former Chief Minister SM Krishna, who passed away at 92 years old in the early hours of Tuesday.

State Mourning and Last Rites

The government has announced three days of state mourning as a mark of respect for the veteran leader. During this period:

  • All public entertainment programs are banned across Karnataka.
  • The national flag will be flown at half-mast in all government buildings.
The last rites of SM Krishna will be conducted on Wednesday at his hometown, Maddur, with full state honors. Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, a relative of the late leader, is overseeing the funeral arrangements.

Condolences from Prime Minister Narendra Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his grief and admiration for SM Krishna’s contributions. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), PM Modi wrote:

“Shri SM Krishna Ji was a remarkable leader, admired by people from all walks of life. He always worked tirelessly to improve the lives of others. He is fondly remembered for his tenure as Karnataka’s Chief Minister, particularly for his focus on infrastructural development. Shri SM Krishna Ji was also a prolific reader and thinker.”

PM Modi also shared his personal interactions with SM Krishna:

“I have had many opportunities to interact with Shri SM Krishna Ji over the years, and I will always cherish those interactions. I am deeply saddened by his passing. My condolences to his family and admirers. Om Shanti.”

Legacy of SM Krishna

SM Krishna, who had been battling age-related health issues for some time, leaves behind a legacy of transformative governance and infrastructural development in Karnataka. He served as the state’s Chief Minister and held key roles at the national level.

The Karnataka Assembly session has been adjourned, and many national and state leaders are expected to attend the last rites in Maddur to pay their final respects.
