Suriya’s much-hyped film Kanguva has unfortunately become one of the biggest disappointments in Kollywood’s history. Despite beginning with high expectations and a massive budget aimed at delivering a magnum opus, the film failed to resonate with audiences, leading to a steep decline at the box office.
After entering its third week, Kanguva managed to earn just ₹30 lakh on Day 16, bringing its total net collection in India to ₹69.01 crore, as per Sacnilk. Including all taxes, the gross domestic collection now stands at ₹81.43 crore.
In the international market, the film has fared no better, grossing a mere ₹23 crore overseas. Combining both domestic and overseas figures, the worldwide gross collection amounts to ₹104.43 crore after 16 days, according to reports by Koimoi.
The grand ambitions and heavy investments by the makers of Kanguva were undermined by its inability to connect with audiences. Despite the star power of Suriya, the film’s content didn’t generate the expected word-of-mouth buzz, leading to its downfall.
Owing to its underwhelming box office performance, the makers have opted for an early OTT release. Kanguva will premiere on Prime Video starting December 13, 2024, offering viewers a chance to watch the film from the comfort of their homes.

Kanguva had all the ingredients for a blockbuster—Suriya’s star appeal, grand visuals, and a massive production scale. However, its failure to engage audiences has made it one of Kollywood’s most significant box office disasters.
With its early OTT release on Prime Video, the film has a chance to redeem itself among a wider audience. Mark your calendars for December 13, when Kanguva debuts on streaming platforms, offering fans and cinephiles an opportunity to judge the film for themselves.
