Delhi’s Air Quality Plummets: Flights Delayed, Health Risks Rise as AQI Exceeds 1,500

Delhi’s air quality has hit alarming levels, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) surpassing 1,500 in several areas. Experts liken the current pollution levels to smoking up to 50 cigarettes a day, posing severe health risks to residents. The situation has also disrupted daily life, with flights being delayed due to reduced visibility caused by the thick smog enveloping the city.

GRAP Stage 4 Implemented to Combat Crisis

To address the escalating pollution crisis, authorities have implemented Stage 4 of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP), the highest level of emergency measures aimed at curbing air pollution. Key actions under GRAP Stage 4 include:

  1. Banning Construction Activities: All construction and demolition activities have been halted, except for essential projects such as hospitals and metro work.
  2. Shutting Non-Essential Industries: Non-compliant industrial units have been ordered to cease operations.
  3. Vehicle Restrictions: Trucks carrying non-essential goods have been restricted from entering the city, while restrictions on diesel vehicles are being strictly enforced.
  4. Educational Adjustments: Schools have been advised to shift to online classes to protect children from exposure to harmful air.
  5. Public Awareness: The government is urging residents to avoid outdoor activities and use N95 masks if stepping out is unavoidable.

Health Concerns Skyrocket

The toxic air is a serious public health emergency. Prolonged exposure to such high pollution levels can cause respiratory issues, heart diseases, and long-term lung damage. Vulnerable groups, including children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing conditions, are at greater risk.

Hospitals in Delhi are witnessing a surge in patients with breathing difficulties, while sales of air purifiers and masks have skyrocketed. The smog, primarily caused by vehicular emissions, industrial activities, stubble burning, and unfavorable weather conditions, has become a pressing issue for the government and citizens alike.

Impact on Transportation

The thick layer of smog has severely impacted visibility, leading to delays in flight operations at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport. Travelers are advised to check with airlines for updates, as delays and cancellations are expected to continue until visibility improves. Road traffic has also slowed, with drivers navigating through poor visibility conditions.

Urgent Need for Sustainable Solutions

While emergency measures under GRAP are crucial in the short term, experts stress the need for long-term strategies to combat air pollution. Recommendations include:

  • Promoting electric vehicles and public transportation.
  • Encouraging cleaner industrial practices.
  • Investing in renewable energy.
  • Strict enforcement of crop residue burning bans in neighboring states.
